Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
