At least 13 people killed and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
